latin name: zingiber officinale, an herbaceous perennial with upright stems and narrow medium green leaves arranged in two ranks on each stem. Light yellow oil is steam distilled from the aromatic tuberlike rhizome (underground stem) which is warty and branched. Used in cooking, aromatherapy and other medicinal uses.
